Moment by moment

Val and Amanda: 1993 ~ 2013 ~ 2021

Anniversaries tend to be marked in years, but each anniversary arrives after a steady series of moments that pull us through each set of 365 days. If you’re lucky, as I am in my relationship with Val, then those many moments are ones of happiness and contentment more than anything else.

This year marks our 28th anniversary as a couple, eight of those legally married. According to Google’s calculations, we have shared more than fourteen million moments together — that’s a lot of moments (or minutes), by anyone’s count.

We are not as young as we used to be, but the fundamentals of our connection are not reliant on speed. Our advantage has always been core strength of shared values, deep appreciation of each other’s mind and intellect, and gratitude for the innate generosity we each have towards others — and that we have towards each other, too.

We have talked and laughed our way through the years, along the way raising cats, watching birds, exploring the wilderness, riding bikes, sharing meals, enjoying friends... Val has supported me in my professional and community work, as I have supported her in hers. Individually we are each capable; together, we are indomitable.

I celebrate the 28 years we have shared together and I look to the future for many more moments of living and of loving together.

The world would be a better place if everyone were as fortunate as I am to have a partner who talks and listens openly, who believes in me, and who loves me deep and true. Thank you, Val. xo

  1. Happy anniversary Amanda and Val. 28 years! That's quite a long time to have daily breakfast with anyone. Julie and I just celebrated 25 years, not at all marred by the fact that she thought it was 24, but more about that later. Living and being with someone for this long shows love and also determination. Determination to separate the wheat from the chaff, which blows away given the chance anyway.
Love to you both from your American cousin.
